Additional information: Comes from the Acre Experimental Station, Western Galilee, Israel. From the researchers: E. Lavav, D. Zamet and S. Gazit. Sowing of “Tova” by an unknown pollen parent. Introduced in 1995. Light yellow flesh with green margins close to the skin, buttery texture to slightly sour at the end of the harvest season. Good taste, somewhat chubby but with occasional slight bitterness. Period about 6 months from the end of December to June (in Israel). Tree upright and medium small without aroma of anise on the leaves. Most of the varieties grown in California belong to the group “Guatemala” or “Mexican” (or a hybrid of both) while Florida grows mostly in “West India”. This is done by weight as a sample of the ripe fruit is taken.
Avocado of Crete Gil (Avocado Gil)
Cretan Avocado Variety Gil. Avocados are known as nutrient boosters because they allow the body to absorb more fat-soluble nutrients from the foods eaten with them. Avocados also provide the same many essential nutrients as fiber, potassium, vitamin E, B vitamins and folic acid and contain more protein than any other fruit. They are known to be high in fat and are actually only secondary to olives in oil content between fruits, but avocado oil is high in monounsaturated fatty acids, which is relatively healthy and can actually help reduce blood cholesterol levels. Avocados come in a variety of colors, some of which are pictured here. As the avocado ripens, the color often changes in a characteristic way of the variety. Nutritionists around the world praise avocados for their benefits to humans.
